Organist/Pianist


LEADERSHIP POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Organist/Pianist
Reports To: Director of Music and Senior Pastor

Principle Function

The basic function of the organist/pianist is to help provide music leadership for the congregation in the areas of organ and piano accompaniment.

Qualifications

The organist/pianist must be a trained musician who is proficient in both organ and piano, with proven accompanist skills for both congregational and choral singing. Candidate must agree with and support the Vision, Mission, Purpose, and Statement of Faith of St. Peter’s Reformed Church.

Specific List of Responsibilities

1.  Selects and presents Preludes, Offertories, Postludes and other worship service music appropriate to the season and/or occasion.
2.  Selects and presents music for all special celebrations of worship, as requested by the Director of Music and/or Senior Pastor; these include Advent and Christmas Services, Lenten and Easter Services, Cantatas, and any other special services.
3.  Accompanies weekly choir rehearsals as well as rehearsals prior to the worship services.  During performance, an attempt should be made to use the organ when accompanying the choir on pieces written for the organ.
4.  Provides a positive and supportive attitude when working with the Senior Pastor, Director of Music, other musicians, and members of the congregation.
5.  Playing for funerals held at the church is always appreciated, but not required. Remuneration for these services will be provided by the family of the deceased.
6.  Selects and presents music for weddings held at the church, when requested by the couple. All arrangements and fees are to be negotiated by the couple and organist. It is expected that fees will vary depending upon the number of selections requested and whether extra preparation is required.
7.  Oversees the tuning and maintenance of the church pianos and organ, while adhering to the approved budget.
8.  Assists in locating competent substitute organists/pianists when unable to play during vacation time or illness. The schedule and names of individuals must be given to the Director of Music for approval. The organist/pianist is expected to notify the Director of
Music and the Senior Pastor at least two weeks in advance of vacation time taken. The church will compensate the substitute organist/pianist.
9.  Submits titles of service music to the Church Secretary in a timely fashion.
10.  Other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Music and/or the Senior Pastor.

General Information

1.  Salary shall be based upon training, experience and performance of duties. A weekly salary is established each year when the budget is approved.
2. A newly hired organist/pianist will be evaluated by the Director of Music and Senior Pastor at the end of the first 90 days of active employment, and annually thereafter.
3. Vacation time is based on vacation policy of St. Peter’s Reformed Church. Any vacation taken in addition to the weeks allowed will be unpaid.
4. In the event of termination of employment by either party, two months’ notice shall be given by the terminating party. The amount of time may be shortened by mutual agreement of both parties.
